Kevin Mbabu with SW: Beyond the Game
1. Your style has a lot of personality — when you’re putting an outfit together, what’s the first thing you think about: comfort, creativity, or making a statement?
I would certainly say comfort and creativity are the two main factors day to day, but I’m definitely not afraid to make a statement. I feel as if feeling comfortable allows you to then get creative. For me, at the end of the day, you have to be confident in your outfits.
2. Many athletes use fashion as a way to express who they are off the pitch — how much does your personal style reflect your personality?
For me, I use fashion to express my personality. It’s a whole mix of loud, creative colours but also with subtle detailing, and that symbolises me and my personality. A lot of people see the way I play, but off the pitch I am more calm and precise, which is reflected in the details of my outfits. Then there is also the flip side of power and leadership, which is reflected by the bold colours I choose to wear.
3. Where do you usually draw inspiration for your looks — are there particular designers, cultures, or even fellow athletes that influence you?
My inspiration is definitely drawn more from music. Music is a huge part of my life and I often find myself discovering new brands and pieces from artists. Recently, for example, Paly Hollywood and Erl. I love to listen to artists from all over the globe. My favourite genres are Afrobeats, Amapiano, Hip Hop and Melodic Rap — all of which showcase artists who really express their own style and creative flow. Examples would be Asake, Gunna, A$AP Rocky and Tyler, the Creator. Of course, there are athletes who are heavily involved within the fashion scene, and I respect them for setting their own vibe, like Lewis Hamilton or Moise Kean. But personally, I’ve found my own lane that I feel helps me to be even more free with my wardrobe choices.
4. How do you balance trends with staying true to your own signature style?
I don’t really, if I’m honest. I wear what I feel good in. It’s not important to me if it’s “on trend” or not — I am just happy setting my own style. When I first arrived in Denmark, I feel as if the guys recognised that I had my own style and didn’t always follow what was “in” at the time. That said, I find Scandinavian style, especially in Copenhagen, really clean. They are easily one of the best dressed regions I have experienced in Europe. Whenever I visit Copenhagen, I see a whole mixture of different cool and original outfit vibes.

5. If fashion is another form of communication, what do you hope people understand about you just by seeing the way you dress?
It’s not even an “if”. Fashion IS another form of communication. It’s your expression before the person even knows the sound of your voice. Through my style I hope people feel my energy — I am so big on that. That is what we are in control of. The tones I use communicate the energy I emit. One day I may feel at peace and chilled, so you will see me in earthy tones. But another day I may feel loud, and that is when you see me in my vibrant pieces. It’s all subject to how I feel when I wake up that morning, which is the beauty of fashion. Also, I would like people to understand that the cost of an item is not the definition of style. I love to find new, upcoming brands that I can support. I think we are past the days of fashion being defined by “flashy” brands. Just because a brand has 250 followers does not mean it’s not going to be good. I see it as a chance to be a part of history and growth. So when you see my style, understand that it may be low-key, but it speaks for a community you may not have found yet.

“What I love about SW is the way you give freedom for individuality and self-expression on a global stage. For me, fashion has always been about energy and authenticity — showing who you are before you even speak. I see SW doing the same for athletes and artists: amplifying their voice, their story and their style. It’s not just about luxury or image, it’s about inspiring communities, opening doors for new talent and creating a culture that people can truly connect with. I am delighted and feel privileged to be part of this mission”.
