A&K Sanctuary to open Samkani Camp on Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni in late 2027

Bolivia’s salt flats have never had a proper place to stay. That changes in late 2027, when A&K Sanctuary opens Samkani Camp, a five suite retreat built entirely from Airstreams and set directly on the Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flat on earth.

SW has been tracking the slow build of ultra remote luxury for a while now, from mobile camps in the African bush to riverboats along quiet stretches of the Nile. Samkani Camp takes that same instinct for low impact, high comfort travel and drops it somewhere far more exposed: 12,000 square kilometres of blinding white salt, with guests typically 20 to 30 kilometres from any other human presence.

The name comes from Aymara, the language of Bolivia’s Altiplano, and translates loosely to the one who dreams. It is a fitting brief for a camp designed around total darkness and a 360 degree view of the stars.

The design

Each of the five suites is a self sufficient, architect designed Airstream, its metal shell chosen to echo the salt and sky around it rather than interrupt them. Inside: blue Bolivian marble, chrome detailing and a sixth trailer at the heart of camp given over to dining and a bar. The whole thing sits somewhere between expedition kit and five star retreat, which is exactly the point.

What is included

Every stay comes with a private guide and driver, plus access to more than 30 experiences across the salar, several of them exclusive to A&K Sanctuary guests. Expect trips to hidden islands and volcanic caves by day, and stargazing sessions under some of the clearest skies in the Southern Hemisphere by night, led by A&K’s Bolivian team.

Booking

Samkani Camp opens to guests in late 2027 and will be bookable as part of an A&K Tailormade journey or a Small Group Journey to Bolivia. An on-sale date is yet to be confirmed.

A note on accuracy before this goes live: A&K Sanctuary has not released pricing, so none should be implied in copy. The opening date and on-sale date are both still described as “late 2027” and “to be announced” respectively, so avoid firming these up further than the source material allows.
